MJSPA Intruder Policy
This policy outlines our approach to an intruder during an MJSPA class (Advised by the RAD) to help support our teachers if a situation is to occur.
An intruder is a person who has not been invited into the premise, and/or who has no legal right or
permission to enter. Before an intruder is approached by a teacher, they must determine whether it is safe for them to approach the intruder or whether they need to seek immediate advice/help.
Initial protocol – To avoid intruders entering during a class, teachers should lock outside doors to the building where possible and where safe to do so that doesn’t cause a fire safety risk. This will vary by venue and teachers should speak to MJSPA before the class to understand the venue policy.
In a situation where an intruder who is armed or otherwise poses a safety hazard is able to enter the studio.
- Immediately begin to evacuate the room, using the alternative entrance to the studio.
- Alert the teaching assistant or parent to call the Police (999) immediately. Or if quicker/possible make the call yourself.
- Maintain a visual of the intruder until all students have been able to exit the room
Give the operator the following information:
1. Location of the intruder (where they are in the building)
2. Physical and clothing descriptions, including any weapons that may be involved.
3. Advise the operator of your actions to safeguard any children, young people, members of staff and remain on the line until told to hang-up.
Do not approach or engage with the intruder, unless a student is in immediate danger. In a hostage situation where children, young people or staff are prevented from leaving a lecture room, studio or another area, the first consideration must be to keep everyone calm as best as possible without creating panic or fear. Remain calm and do not attempt to disarm the intruder.
